Annie Information

About the Show:

Annie has held a special place in audiences' hearts for decades. The title heroine is a model of inspiration and optimism, and songs like "Maybe," "It's the Hard-Knock Life," and "Tomorrow" are now musical theatre standards. Originally premiering on Broadway in 1977, starring Andrea McArdle in the title role, the show ran for almost six years and a total of 2,377 performances. And critics enjoyed it as much as audiences; out of an impressive 11 Tony Award nominations, it won 7, including those for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book.

Annie was such a major hit that it spawned several national tours, a West End production, and revivals in both cities, not to mention productions in countries all over the world, including Argentina, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Sweden, and many more. Two film adaptations have since been made: one in 1982 starring Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, and Bernadette Peters; and one in 1999 starring Kathy Bates, Victor Garber, and Kristin Chenoweth. With a show so ingrained in popular culture, you are guaranteed a truly special and memorable performance. Order your Annie tickets today and start looking forward to "Tomorrow."

Plot Synopsis:

In 1933, at a New York City orphanage, eleven-year-old Annie is fast asleep with her friends, all orphans between the ages of six and thirteen. When little Molly wakes herself from a nightmare, Annie comes to her side to comfort her. At Molly's request, Annie reads the note that her parents left with her when they dropped her off at the orphanage in 1922. The note promises that they will come back for her one day, and it gives all the girls hope for the future. When Annie decides to escape to try to find her parents, she is apprehended by the cantankerous, alcoholic orphanage director, Miss Hannigan. Angered by her impudence, she forces all the girls to get up and start scrubbing the floors. When Mr. Bundles, the laundry man, arrives, Miss Hannigan becomes distracted flirting with him and Annie escapes in the laundry bin. Once Miss Hannigan realizes that Annie has escaped, she takes it out on the other girls and they ruminate on their frustrating "hard knock" lives.

On her own, Annie finds a stray dog, which she names Sandy, and narrowly avoids being apprehended by the police until she reaches a dilapidated Hooverville. The residents there express their bitterness about their lives of poverty caused by the Great Depression, and while Annie tries to get them to look on the bright side, she is caught by the police and brought back to the orphanage. Once there, she meets Grace Farrell, assistant to the billionaire Oliver Warbucks. She is looking for an orphan to spend the holidays at the Warbucks mansion, and despite Miss Hannigan's earnest interference, she chooses Annie and takes her away. Alone, Miss Hannigan explodes with anger at being stuck with sniveling little orphans.

At the Warbucks estate, scores of servants greet Annie warmly. When the stressed-out Oliver Warbucks arrives, he is in no mood for Annie's games. But once she charms him into spending a night on the town with her, they begin to get along famously. Meanwhile, Miss Hannigan is visited by her crook brother, Rooster, and his floozy girlfriend, Lily St. Regis. When they catch wind that Annie is staying with a billionaire, they start thinking of a way to get some money out of the arrangement. Back at the mansion, Warbucks surprises Annie with a new locket from Tiffany, but when he presents it to her, she bursts into tears, saying that the locket she wears is the only thing she has left from her parents. Heartbroken, Warbucks vows to help Annie find her parents by any means necessary.

Warbucks' plans involve a large monetary reward, a radio broadcast, and even the President of the United States, but will it all be enough to help Annie find her family? Miss Hannigan and her dubious cohorts aim to throw a wrench into that plan using inside information, assumed identities, and forged documents. Will their selfish plans sabotage Annie's dreams? Get your Annie tickets right away to see the dramatic events unfold in this classic story.
