American Idiot Information
About the Show:
American Idiot is a fast-paced, high-energy rock opera-style musical based on the hit 2004 concept album of the same name by Green Day. It embodies the album's themes of frustration with everyday life, explosive protest of society and government, and desperation to find meaning in life's successes and failures. It is creatively staged, featuring a multitude of television screens that broadcast stimulating (sometimes over-stimulating) images, emphasizing the show's criticism of the United States' media-obsessed culture, set among dilapidated buildings covered with graffiti and garbage, a testament to the characters' desperate circumstances. The show features several sequences of head-banging, stomping choreography by the energetic ensemble, punctuated by soft, poignant, but still angst-ridden ballads. When you get tickets to American Idiot, you are getting much more than a concert; you are getting a multi-sensory roller coaster ride.
Green Day fans are pumped to hear their favorite hits from the American Idiot album as well as a few of Green Day's other tracks, and those new to the band will be lucky to be able to fall in love with these meaningful and catchy songs for the first time in this fully fleshed-out dramatic interpretation. Favorite songs include "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Holiday," and "21 Guns," but there are so many more amazing musical moments. As the story opens, several angst-ridden youths complain of their mundane, suburban lives. Sick of media oversaturation and the state of society and politics, they thrash in protest. One night, the three main characters, Johnny, Will, and Tunny, run out of beer and head out to the 7-Eleven. The trio realizes they are headed nowhere in life and Johnny urges his friends to get out of town. He buys bus tickets for them, but Will is forced to stay behind when his girlfriend, Heather, reveals she is pregnant. Johnny and Will travel to the city with a gang of other like-minded teens and twenty-somethings.
Once in the city, Johnny becomes infatuated with a beautiful girl he sees in a window and Tunny, so jaded that not even the city can excite him, enlists in the army. Alone and frustrated with his empty life, Johnny creates a destructive character in his subconscious called "St. Jimmy" and begins using heroin. Elsewhere, Will falls into a depressing rut, lazily sitting on the couch while Heather's pregnancy progresses, and Tunny is deployed and shortly wounded in battle.
Soon, Johnny's life is completely taken over by St. Jimmy's harmful influence; he develops an unhealthy, drug- and sex-centered relationship with the girl from the window, who he calls "Whatsername." Meanwhile, Will and Heather's baby is born, but, fed up with his apathetic attitude, she takes the baby and leaves him. Tunny, lying in a military hospital bed, gives into his sense of despair, hallucinates, and falls in love with his nurse, who he calls "Extraordinary Girl."
In the city, Johnny's drug addiction and consequent erratic behavior comes to a head when he threatens Whatsername and himself with a knife. When she tries to talk to him about it, she is appalled at the extent of his downward spiral. While Extraordinary Girl dresses Tunny's wounds and Will continues his depressing life, still on the couch but now completely alone, Johnny leaves a note for Whatsername saying he has chosen St. Jimmy over her. What does life have in store for these three lost souls? Will Johnny ever break his cycle of self-destruction? Can Will shake his solitary depression? Will Tunny ever be able to live a normal life after facing the atrocities of war? Get your American Idiot tickets today and follow these dramatic journeys to their ends.
