In Ford County, Mississippi, two white, racist men come across a 10-year-old black girl. The rape and beat her before attempting to hang her and dumping her in a river. She survives the attack, and the men are arrested. Fearing that the men will get away with their crime due to the pervasive racism in the South, the girl's father, Carl Lee Hailey, seeks out the help of easygoing white lawyer Jake Brigance. When Brigance admits that there is a chance that they will walk free, Hailey brings an M16 rifle to the county courthouse, killing both rapists and accidentally wounding Deputy Looney, whose injuries result in the amputation of his leg. When Hailey is arrested, Brigance agrees to represent him for a very small amount of money.
