About the Show:

A Raisin in the Sun is a play written by Lorraine Hansberry. Debuting in 1959, it was the first play written by a black woman to be produced on Broadway, and it was originally directed by Lloyd Richards, the first black man to direct a play on Broadway. Starring Sidney Poitier, it was a critical and popular success, ran for almost two years, and went on a national tour.

A revival opened in 2004 starring Audra McDonald (Ragtime), Sean "P Diddy" Combs, Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show), and Sanaa Lathan (Love & Basketball). The 2014 Broadway revival controversially cast Denzel Washington as Walter, even though the role has traditionally been played by much younger actors. Diahann Carroll (Dynasty) and Anika Noni Rose (The Princess and the Frog) were cast alongside Washington, though Carroll withdrew from the production before performances began.

A Raisin in the Sun has been hugely influential in literature and drama. In fact, the 2010 Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play Clybourne Park, by Bruce Norris, was written as a pseudo-sequel to A Raisin in the Sun; the first act depicts the white family who sold the Youngers their house directly after the events of Hansberry's play, and the second act takes place 50 years later.

Plot Synopsis:

In a shabby apartment on the south side of Chicago, Walter Younger lives with his wife, Ruth, his son, Travis, his sister, Beneatha, and his mother, Lena ("Mama"). While Walter is barely scraping by as a limo driver, Mama is waiting for a $10,000 insurance check that might be the solution to their problems. Walter wants to invest it in a liquor store with a friend, but Mama decides to put part down on a house in an all-white neighborhood.

Meanwhile, Beneatha rejects George Murchison, a successful suitor who she believes has assimilated and abandoned his race to be financially successful. Another acquaintance, Joseph Asagai, teaches her about her African heritage and encourages her to embrace her culture.

When Mama agrees to let Walter invest some of the money as long as he saves some for Beneatha's education, his friend turns out to be a crook, leaving Walter's business aspirations dashed. And the family is confronted by a white man who offers to buy them out of their house purchase in an effort to keep the neighborhood free of racial tension. Buy A Raisin in the Sun tickets to see how the Youngers address the issues of racism and economic hardship in their lives.
