The Color Purple News & Review:
The musical adaptation of The Color Purple began life at the Broadway Theatre in New York City on December 1st, 2005. It was directed by Gary Griffin, and produced by Quincy Jones and Oprah Winfrey. With music and lyrics written by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray and choreography by Donald Byrd the show continues to be strong and resulted in a national tour with an extended run in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace Theatre that started on April 17th. As of April 10th, 2007 the role of main character Celie in the New York production is being played by Fantasia Barrino of American Idol fame.
The musical is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The story starts in 1909 Georgia and revolves around the life of then 14 year Celie and her struggles with racism, sexism, incest, domestic violence and abuse, and spiritual crisis. It is a story of trying to cope with day to day existence while some of the most inhumane people have a direct influence on your life. It tells how one poor, black woman can survive in this kind of atmosphere of degradation and still be strong enough to have hopes and dreams and her ability to survive.
