There in rainy Sheffield, England, a band called Atomic Mass was formed in 1977. Nothing special, you might say, but what if I told you that Atomic Mass went on to form Def Leppard, one of the greatest second generation hard metal bands of all time? After a blistering 1979, Def Leppard had attracted a big following among British heavy metal worshippers, which led to their being signed by Phonogram, known as Mercury Records in America. Def Leppard tickets began to mean something to the officionados of the scene, and pretty soon the band, with its trademark guitar sound and cocky vocals, came to be considered among the leaders of the entire heavy rock scene. The band's debut album, On Through the Night, was released in March, 1980, and the legend grew from there. At this point drummer Rick Allen was literally in his mid-teens, having joined the band as its full-time drummer aged just 15 the previous year.

This happened after the release of the band's second and third albums, High and Dry and Pyromania, but the drummer refused to be beaten, and set about designing a special drum-set that allowed him to use his legs as well as his remaining arm. The rest of the decade saw the band go from strength to strength, and they were to become a household name across the Atlantic as well as in Europe. They were inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Walk of Fame on Sunset Boulevard in September, 2000.
