If I asked you what sport the highest paid athlete in the world hails from, what would you say? Many of us would go for the big team sports: Basketball, Football, perhaps European Football; but we’d all be wrong -- ithe higehst paid athletes in the world are found inside the ring.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The highest paid athlete in the world (according to Forbes and Sports Illustrated) is in fact American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. Still undefeated in professional fights, he has gained great respect to go with his ten world titles and lineal championships in four different weight classes. Over the years he has been named Fighter of the Year multiple times by different boxing organizations, and has won several ESPYs for Best Fighter. Currently the World Welterweight Champion, Mayweather is rated as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world by many sporting news and boxing websites.

One of Mayweather's recent wins came against Marcos Maidana in a televised pay-per-view fight. Billed as "The Moment," it was a welterweight champion superfight, held on May 3, 2014 in MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. On the line were welterweight (140-147 lbs) titles from the WBC (World Boxing Council), the WBA (World Boxing Association), and The Ring (The major boxing magazine). Mayweather won after 12 rounds by majority decision, which is when two judges vote for a winner and a third votes that the match was a draw.

Mayweather vs. Maidan II

And that of course set up what was a huge rematch, billed as "Mayhem." Mayweather vs. Maidan II, went down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Friday, September 12, 2014. Mayweather won via unanimous decision, with judges awarding two scores of 116-111 and 115-112. With last match coming going to the wire, boxing fans with tickets sure got their money's worht. Mayweather is still going strong, so if you're a fan of boxing stay tuned for his latest figth ticket.

Manny Pacquiao

And then there’s Manny Pacquiao, another major boxer in today’s rings. A Filipino, Pacquiao has quite the resume. In addition to having won ten world titles and being named the fighter of the decade for the 2000s, Pacquiao has been an actor, musician, professional basketball player, and even a politician, being elected to the House of Representatives in the Philippines. He is also the fourteenth highest paid athlete in the world.

Boxing is an exciting sport with tremendous athletes like these. If you’re used to the big American team sports, take a step outside what you know and into the boxing arena. Buy tickets for a boxing match, and experience the thrill of this ancient tradition. You’re sure to see a great fight, and may find out why these are some of the highest paid athletes in the world.

UFC

Ultimate Fighting Championship

In recent years, some have intimated that boxing has lost a lot of popularity to the upstart fighting league Ultimate Fighting Championship, also knows as UFC, known for its caged fighting matches. While at its core UFC and boxing share the premise of two fighters squaring off to see who can beat who, that's about where the similarities end. Boxing matches are comprised of a series of three minute rounds, while UFC fights last much less time. UFC also has fewer rules and allows kicks, fighting on the ground and much more. UFC belongs to a larger grouping of fight sports called Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), which has been a growing sporting area in recent years and includes the Bellator fighting championship, Absolute Fighting Championship, Cagesport and more. If you are a fan of boxing then you will probably enjoy a UFC and MMA fight as well, so don't pass up a chance at tickets!
