With its start in the 1950s in the US, the mix of rhythm and blues has moved to varieties of Memphis, Motown, Neo and melody. As soul music evolved it leaned heavily on influences from Ray Charles, James Brown, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett to achieve that classic sound exemplified by Aretha Franklin in "Respect." As of summer, 2010, though, you'd better be lookin' out for those hot tickets to the Rihanna schedule, 'cos she's comin' to a town near you!
