San Diego has a growing art scene. Three NFL Super Bowlchampionships and many college football bowl games have been held there. BalboaStadium is the city's former home of the San Diego Chargers. PETCO Park in downtown San Diego hosts Major League Baseball along with other occasionalsoccer and rugby events. The San Diego Sports Arena hosts basketball, and has alsohosted ice hockey, indoor soccer and boxing. Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl on the campusof San Diego State University hosts the NCAA Division I San Diego State Aztecs men'sand women's basketball games and also hosts the San Diego Shockwave of the NationalIndoor Football League. Torero Stadium at the University of San Diego hosts collegefootball and soccer, and the Jenny Craig Pavilion at USD hosts basketball and volleyball.
San Diego has been the home of two NBA franchises, the first of which was calledthe San Diego Rockets. The Rockets represented the city of San Diego from 1967 until1971. After the conclusion of the 1970-1971 season, they moved to Texas where theybecame the Houston Rockets. Seven years later, San Diego received a relocated NBAfranchise (the Buffalo Braves), which was renamed the San Diego Clippers. The Clippersplayed in the San Diego Sports Arena from 1978 until 1984. Prior to the start ofthe 1984-1985 season, the team was moved to Los Angeles, and is now called the LosAngeles Clippers.
Unfortunately, San Diego has the dubious distinction of being the largest UnitedStates city to have not won a Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, NBA Finalsor any other Major League sports championship; this is known as the San Diego SportsCurse.
With the automobile being the primary means of transportation for over 80 percentof its residents, San Diego is served by an extensive network of freeways and highways.This includes I-5, which runs south to Tijuana and north to the Canadian borderthrough Orange County, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Portland, and Seattle; I-8, whichruns east to Imperial County and Arizona; and I-15, which runs north to the Canadianborder through Riverside County and Salt Lake City. Notable state highways are CA-94,which connects downtown with I-805, I-15 and east county; CA-163, which connectsdowntown with the northeast part of the san-diego, intersects I-805 and merges withI-15 at Miramar; CA-52, which connects La Jolla with east county through Santeeand CA-125; CA-56, which connects I-5 with I-15 through Carmel Valley and RanchoPeasquitos; and CA-75 (San Diego-Coronado Bridge), which spans San Diego Bay.
San Diego is served by the trolley, bus, Coaster, and Amtrak. The trolley primarilyserves downtown and surrounding urban communities, Mission Valley, east county andcoastal south bay. The Amtrak and Coaster trains currently run along the coastlineand connect San Diego with Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, San Bernardino,and Ventura via MetroLink. There are three Amtrak stations in San Diego, in SorrentoValley, Old Town, and Union Station (downtown). The bus is available along almostall major routes, however a large number of bus stops are concentrated in centralSan Diego. Typical wait times vary from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the locationand route. Trolleys arrive every 5 to 15 minutes (depending on time of day). Ferriesare also available every half hour crossing San Diego Bay to Coronado.
San Diego International Airport, also known as Lindbergh International Airport orLindbergh Field, is the primary commercial airport serving San Diego. It is thebusiest single-runway airport in the nation and is located on San Diego Bay threemiles from downtown. It has scheduled services all over the USA, Mexico, Hawaii,and Canada and serves as a focus san-diego for Southwest Airlines. Other airportsinclude Brown Field Municipal Airport (Brown Field) and Montgomery Field MunicipalAirport (Montgomery Field). Tijuana International Airport can be used to make connectionswithin Mexico and Japan.
The Port of San Diego manages the maritime operations of San Diego harbor. Cruiseships arrive and depart from San Diego's cruise ship terminal at the foot of Broadwaydowntown. Carnival Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, and CelebrityCruises have home port cruise ships in San Diego during the Winter season. Popularcruise destinations include Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean via the PanamaCanal.
