Nashville has a rich music tradition most notably country, christian pop, and ,eventhough it isn't known for being a jazz town, many jazz bands including The NashvilleJazz Machine, the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, and The Establishment all call the cityhome. Many popular tourist sites revolve around country music, including the CountryMusic Hall of Fame, Ryman Auditorium, which was for many years the site of the GrandOle Opry, and Belcourt Theater. Every year, the 4 day CMA (Country Music Association)Music Festival (formerly known as Fan Fair) brings thousands of country fans tothe city. Lower Broadway is home to many honky tonk bars and clubs. The most famousof these is probably Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, which has hosted many big names incountry music while remaining small, intimate, and relatively unchanged since itsfounding in the 1960s.
All of the Big Four record labels; Sony BMG, EMI, Universal and Warner, as wellas numerous independent labels, have offices in Nashville, mostly in the Music Rowarea. Nashville has been the second largest music production center (after New York)in the U.S. since the 1960s. As of 2006, Nashville's music industry is estimatedto have a total economic impact of $6.4 billion per year and contributes 19,000jobs to the Nashville area.
Civil War history also plays an important role in the city's tourism industry. Sitespertaining to the Battle of Nashville and the nearby Battle of Franklin and Battleof Stones River can be seen. Several well-preserved antebellum plantation housessuch as Belle Meade Plantation and Belmont Mansion can be seen as well.
In September, Nashville hosts the Tennessee State Fair at the State Fairgrounds.The State Fair lasts nine days and includes rides, rodeos, tractor pulls, exhibits,and many other shows and attractions. The Nashville Film Festival also takes placethere every year for a week in April. It features hundreds of independent filmsand is one of the biggest film festivals in the Southern United States.
Nashville also has a number of centers for the performing arts as well as severalmuseums. The Tennessee Performing Arts Center is the major performing arts centerof the city and is the home of the Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Nashville Children'sTheatre, the Nashville Opera, and Nashville Ballet. In September 2006, the SchermerhornSymphony Center opened as the home of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. The cityalso has the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, located in the former post officebuilding; Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art; the Tennessee State Museum;Fisk University's Van Vechten and Aaron Douglas Galleries; Vanderbilt University'sFine Art Gallery and Sarratt Gallery; and the Parthenona, a full-scale replica ofthe original Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
Nashville is located centrally at the crossroads of three Interstate Highways: I-40,I-24, and I-65. Interstate 440 is a bypass route connecting the three highways southof downtown Nashville. The Metropolitan Transit Authority provides bus transit throughoutthe city.
Nashville International Airport provides service to the city, which was a hub forAmerican Airlines between 1986 and 1995. It is located in the southeastern partof Nashville and was originally called Berry Field, Nashville until 1988 when itwas changed to its current name. As of 2006, the Nashville International Airportis served by 11 airlines operating 424 average flights daily. It is now a mini-hubfor Southwest Airlines.
Although it is a major rail hub, with a large CSX Transportation freight rail yardwhich services most of the east coast, Nashville is one of the largest cities inthe U.S. not served by Amtrak.
Nashville launched a passenger rail system called the Music City Star on September18, 2006. The first and only currently operational part of the system connects thecity of Lebanon, which is east of Nashville, to the downtown of that city. The serviceuses the existing tracks of the Nashville and Eastern Railroad. The line currentlyhas six stops: Riverfront Station (western terminus), Donelson, Hermitage, Mt. Juliet,Martha (Tennessee State Route 109 and U.S. Highway 70), and Lebanon (eastern terminus).Expansion plans include four more lines form Nashville, terminating in Gallatinto the northeast, Franklin to the south, Murfreesboro to the southeast, and Dicksonto the west and are planned to use existing CSX Transportation railroad lines.
