Florida is a state packed with natural wonders, and the Everglades National Park is among America's most famous. Covering 1.5 million acres of swamps, saw-grass prairies, and sub-tropical jungles, the Everglades constitutes the wildest public park in the United States. Way down on the tropical southern tip of Florida, the park houses innumerable rare and endangered species, such as the little known American Crocodile, the Florida Panther, and the West Indian Manatee. There are also surviving pockets of Seminole Indians living in the park. It is a haven for scientists and explorers, and is surely one of the most adventurous things to do in Miami, without actually being in Miami. Hiking, camping and canoeing are all extensively performed for leisure throughout the Everglades. Today, it is a wonderland of natural treasure, a paradise that is yours to discover!
But if swashbuckling tales of adventure and romance in the swamplands aren't to your personal taste, then try a walk into the South Beach area of Miami. This beautiful city offers lots of great Miami events and activities, and good times at South Beach is definitely one of them. You could travel the world over before you found another city quite like Miami, with its clear blue waters and gorgeous art deco architecture. South Beach is famous for its clubs and outrageous locals, and a night out here will be a memorable one. The kind South Florida climate means you can enjoy the charms of South Beach year-round, and drink your strawberry diaquiri at a sidewalk cafe without fear of rain spoiling your evening. South Beach has numerous large hotels overlooking the beach, but there are plenty of smaller one-off quaint hotels with much to offer. Check out this wild and memorable place!
The region has its mysteries, such as the Bermuda Triangle, but possibly the most solid and real mystery in Florida is Coral Castle in Homestead, close to Miami. Coral Castle is one of the most mysterious structures ever built, and has even been compared to Stonehenge, and the great pyramids of Egypt! It is an amazing accomplishment, chiefly (but not only) because it was quarried, carved, transported, and built by one individual, Edward Leedskalnin, a 5-ft. tall, 100-lb. Latvian immigrant. Leedskalnin's decision to use tons of coral as building materials is what makes the feat so unbelievable. The massive coral blocks, some weighing as much as 30 tons, were mysteriously lifted and set in place without use of modern machines. Approximately 1,000 tons of coral rock were used in construction of the walls and ornate towers, and a further 100 tons of it were carved into the furniture and ornamental devices with which the whole bizarre structure is decorated. If you see nothing else in Miami, please see this wonder of the world- could you imagine if a Miami concert was held there?
If you like monkeys - and who doesn't? - Monkey Jungle in southern Miami is the place for you. Watching these colorful primates swinging through trees above your head and communicating with each other in complex ways, you will laugh like you haven't laughed in a long time. Monkey Jungle opened in 1935, when Joseph DuMonds and his wife brought their first six monkeys to the 10-acre plot in order to conduct some research. Florida was chosen for a location, due to its excellent climate and complex ecology, which are very similar to Southeast Asia, where the monkeys evolved. Everyone loves a monkey or three, and Monkey Jungle is a great place to be!
One place that will challenge your ideas, and give you a great fun day out, is the Miami Science Museum. The museum is packed with interesting learning devices, from studies of the farthest galaxies, to ecological studies of animal communities living right here in southern Florida. The experience of watching your children come alive, as they learn about these exciting and colorful truths is one you'll want them to associate with their dream vacation in Miami forever. Take a trip to the Science Museum and see dinosaurs come alive, volcanoes erupt, and ancient humans migrate across the globe!
