The 109th edition of the World Series kicks of later tonight at Fenway Park when the Boston Red Sox host the St. Louis Cardinals. The Series pits two of baseball's most historic franchises from baseball cities and matches up the teams tied for the best record during the regular season, 97-65. It is first time since 1999 that the two teams with the best records have met in the Series, and this marks just the third time in history ('49 and '58) that the World Series teams have had the same record.... The 2013 American League Championship Series shifts to Detroit on Tuesday following one of the biggest swings in momentum in playoff history. After being all-but-no-hit in game one, the Red Sox were down 5-1 in the eighth inning in game two, just four outs away from heading to Detroit down two games to none with what was supposedly an unstoppable offense that had been rendered powerless.
Instead, David Ortiz did what David Ortiz does and blasted a Joaquin Benoit fastball into the bullpen for a ... [Read more]
The MLB playoffs are underway and in the American League the Boston Red Sox have completed one of the most impressive regular-season turnarounds we've seen recently. The Olde Towne Team went from a 69–93 record and a last place finish in the AL East to a 97-65 record, tying the St Louis Cardinals for the best record in baseball. Now they aim to build on that turnaround and win what would be the team's third World Series title in nine years.
But will the Red Sox win the World Series?
This is a ... [Read more]
The basic role of sports general managers is one that is widely misunderstood. Essentially, a sports general manager must learn how to do more with less. The goal of a general manager is simple — to build a team that is consistently competitive, while at the same time, he or she must avoid depleting the future of the team as a whole. Generally speaking, being a sports general manager is far easier when the individual has money as opposed to when they are poor. For instance, over the last d... [Read more]
The 2013 All-Star break is upon us, signaling the halfway point of the baseball season and providing us with a game featuring the best players in the game, as decided by fans. With recent additions and changes due to player availability, the 2013 All-Star Game will feature 39 players (out of 77) who have never been in the game before, the highest all-time (That is more than when the first All-Star game was held in 1933).
The game of course goes down at City Field, home of the New York Mets. The... [Read more]
Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano has fired Scott Boras as his agent and signed with the newly-launched Roc Nation Sports, which was founded by Jay Z as a division of his Roc Nation and a partnership with Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Cano is expected to soon become the highest paid second baseman in MLB history. He is a four time All-Star and since 2005 leads all second basemen in hits, doubles and RBI. Cano is in the final year of a $57 million, six year contract he signed in 2008. Unless ... [Read more]
With 2013 Opening Day just days away, Live Toast is happy to present our sixth and final 2013 division preview, the AL Central, home of the defending league champion Detroit Tigers. The Tigers swept the Yankees in the ALCS en route to their own World Series sweep at the hands of the San Francisco Giants. Detroit has to be the favorites to repeat as division champs, if not league champs as well. You can easily make the argument they have the best hitter and the best pitcher in the game. But they ... The fifth of our 2013 MLB season previews looks at the NL West, home of the defending champion San Francisco Giants. While the Dodgers dominated the division in the late 2000's the San Francisco Giants have been able to win two of the last three World Series titles on the back of incredible pitching and some timely hitting. Returning much the same team as last season, the champs have to be the favorites, although they will likely face a much tougher division in 2013. That is largely due to the L... [Read more]
In the third installment of Live Toast's 2013 MLB Preview we look at the AL East. We've already looked at the NL East and the AL West, so be sure to check them out.
The AL East looks to easily be the most competitive division in MLB. Some Vegas polls show every team winning more than 80 games, which means all five teams could have a winning percentage higher than .500. For this division this year, it looks like pre-season predictions will be all but worthless, and any of these teams could end u... [Read more]
