The Kentucky Derby is known to be “the most exciting two minutes in sports”, which has taken place every year since 1875. This Grade I stakes race of 20 three-year-old Thoroughbreds is held annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs racing track in Louisville, Kentucky. The race itself is one and a quarter miles long, where colts and geldings (male horses under four years old) carry 126 pounds of weight, and fillies (female horses under four years old) carry 121 pounds of weight. The current record to date for the Kentucky Derby was set by the horse Secretariat in 1973 with a time of 1 minute 59 2/5 seconds. The Kentucky Derby is one of three races that make up the Triple Crown, in which a Thoroughbred must win all three to obtain the title.

This year’s 2014 Contenders (as of 5/1/14)
