It’s funny how the littlest things can get so blown out of proportion. One thing leads to another, and before you know it, you’ve got yourself a murder investigation. Trent Reznor was just starting his band, Nine Inch Nails, in 1989 and producing his first album, Pretty Hate Machine, when he was allegedly “murdered” during the filming of his music video, “Down in It”. In the end of the video, a scene was shot of Reznor lying on the ground, indicating that his character had fallen and died. To shoot that footage, Reznor and his team used a camera that was hoisted into the air using large weather balloons to capture an aerial shot of his body. The strings operating the balloons snapped and the camera floated away, eventually landing hundreds of miles away in a farmer’s field in Michigan. The camera was turned into the police, and thinking it was a snuff film of a murder, was then handed over to the FBI for investigating. Based on the footage, pathologists thought Reznor’s body was rotting and had been decomposing for three weeks, due to the corn starch he had on his face for the video. Other members in the band that appeared in the video led them to believe it was some kind of gang murder. Once Trent Reznor was finally identified in the video, his manager got word and explained the whole situation. Check out the story on it from 1991:
