Shot over three days in Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles, DISCOVERED is a six episode short-form digital series that follows aspiring actress Remi Webb as she runs the gauntlet of instant celebrity. We go behind the scenes with Executive Producer Ashley Jay to find out more about the show.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I graduated with a degree in broadcast-journalism and film studies from Pepperdine University in Malibu. I started my career in acting and hosting then segued into producing with a documentary I worked on called Running Blind with The Kennedy/Marshall Company.

Can you talk about living and working in L.A.?

It's definitely never a dull moment. I like to surround myself with really positive, creative people so it's always been really rewarding. With the digital age there's a lot more freedom to be a self-starter and not have to wait around by the phone for someone to give you a break. There's really no excuse now not to pursue what you love anymore.

What’s the show about?

The show is seen through the eyes of an aspiring actress who is invited to live at the Farm after being discovered on YouTube. It's a house in the Hollywood Hills where six actors, musicians, models and DJs live together trying to make it. The series is an ensemble drama that takes cues from primetime dramas like The OC and One Tree Hill with the look and feel of reality programming like The Hills.

How did you come up with the idea?

The script was initially conceived as an hour-long drama that I really responded to but ultimately didn't move forward at the networks. The writer Jared Battaglia and I were both alums from Pepperdine. We teamed with Alex Egan, a really edgy and subversive music video and reality TV director who had a lot of heat from working with indie rappers like Mickey Avalon. The three of us pooled our resources together and got to work on cracking the show as a short-form digital series.

Can you tell us about the cast and crew?

We have an amazing team. Chanel Celaya is known in the Justin Bieber fandom community for her role in his "As Long As You Love Me" music video. She also appeared in 21 Jump Street where she rejected Jonah Hill’s prom proposal and will next be seen in Transformers 4: Age of Extinction. Model Genevive Morton has a huge global following from her frequent appearances in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit editions and has a cameo in the upcoming film Horrible Bosses 2. Holden Nowell (and his abs) gained popularity as the male lead in Carly Rae Jepsen’s "Call Me Maybe" video. We also have a great DP in Erik Boccio who was able to bring in that “reality look” from his work on all six seasons of Jersey Shore.

Can you give us any clues about the plot?

There are quite a bit of cool twists and surprises we have planned for viewers. Our lead character Remi Webb is setup as your typical naive ingenue but it becomes clear by Episode 3 that that’s not the case. Remi is a nice girl but she’s got a game plan and has a secret she’s keeping from everyone. Hunter (Holden Nowell) is a real live-wire with the DNA for trouble, frequently burning bridges in Hollywood. However, we’ll learn that there’s a pretty tragic backstory motivating his behavior. We’re also laying the groundwork for big wish fulfillment elements as our characters realize their dreams in unexpected ways. Along the way we also have some juicy storylines that put the housemates through the wringer (backstabbing, drug overdoses, stalkers, etc).

What would you like to accomplish with the series?

Foremost, we want to make a show that viewers respond to and one that captures the aspirational fun of “living the dream.” It needs to be a a show that engages fans with new media models and inspires them to get invested in these characters’ lives like they have in traditional television. Our big goal is to transition DISCOVERED eventually to long-form, whether that be a half-hour incarnation like The Hills or a one-hour drama. We hope to partner with a distributor or network that can help us realize the full potential of the show.
