Before Miley, before Gaga, before Queen Bey and Britney, and even before Madonna, there was Cher. Since all the way before the first man landed on the moon, Cher was a pioneer in the twerking equivalent of rankling conservative values. For anyone too young or too square to not know why the return of Cher tour dates is a big deal, this is why there is only one Goddess of Pop.

1. Cher Rocks the Mic

From her early folk roots to the Gypsy stylings of “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” to Brazilian Jazz, Rock, Disco and Electronic Dance, Cher is a diva for the ages and the only recording artist to score a number one single on the Billboard charts in each of the past six decades.

2. Cher Is Made for TV

Cher has been on television since the late 60s and first gained notoriety for heckling the hecklers as well as her husband during their live act. Their comedy schtick led to “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour,” the “Cher” show and Cher TV specials. Cher even released two fitness videos, appeared in several Jack LaLanne Health Club commercials and paved the way for lesser mortals on the late night infomercial circuit earning millions in fees pitching health and beauty products. In her first appearance on “Late Night with David Letterman” she lived out the personal fantasy of millions of viewers when she called him an a**hole.

3. Cher Is a Movie Star

Despite Cher’s early career flops she eventually landed roles in films by Robert Altman, Mike Nichols and Peter Bogdanovich and starred alongside such acclaimed actors as Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nicolas Cage and Liam Neeson.

4. Cher Knows How to Dress

Cher is a fashion icon whose striped bellbottoms, fur vests and ruffled blouses stole the spotlight in London from a little band known as the Beatles during the height of the British Invasion. Cher went on to design her own line of clothing and was a regular clotheshorse for top shelf designers as well as the first woman to bare her navel on television. In 1999 she was honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America for “striking just the right note of contemporary wretched excess.”

5. Cher Is Raining Men

Cher has maneaten her way through a veritable cornucopia of famous fellas including Warren Beatty, Sonny Bono, David Geffen, Gregg Allman, Gene Simmons, Val Kilmer, Eric Stoltz, Tom Cruise, Richie Sambora and someone called the “Bagel Boy” while asserting her independence across several male-dominated industries.

6. Cher Is Starring as Cher

Cher’s first major stage role was as the waitress Sissy in Robert Altman’s Broadway stage production of Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. She may also star as herself in a Broadway musical about her life currently in development.

7. Cher Is Winning

Cher has been nominated for and won several Grammys, Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes and Billboard Music Awards. Cher won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Moonstruck and was named the Best Actress at Cannes for her part in Mask. She and Sonny Bono also share a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

8. Cher Is Controversial

Even at the height of her fame Cher has tackled such controversial topics as racism, unwanted pregnancy, prostitution and divorce. Her performance in the “If I Could Turn Back Time” video featured her straddling a cannon on a Navy warship wearing a see-through body suit that exposed her butt tattoo and caused a minor uproar. She called Catholic nuns “cruel, heartless and wicked” in her song “Sisters of Mercy” for the treatment she received as a child in an orphanage. At both the 58th and 60th Academy Awards Cher wore skimpy lingerie that signaled a sea change for women in Hollywood.

9. Cher Has Gay Pride

Cher’s headlining act at the 2013 Gay Pride Dance on the Pier benefit in downtown NYC was the event’s first sellout performance in five years. At the event she was serenaded by lip-synching drag queens for whom she has become an inspiration due to her fearless devotion to being herself. Cher also turned down a chance to perform at the 2014 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in Russia due to the country’s anti-gay legislation.

10. Cher Is Prolific

Cher released her *26th* album Closer to Truth on September 20, 2013 and is heading out on the 49-date Dressed to Kill tour on March 22, 2014. Starting in 2008, Cher performed a 200-show residency at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. Prior to that she helmed a 325-date Farewell tour. With a total of seven solo tours, 15 films, three variety shows and over 100 million solo albums sold, Cher cannot be stopped.
