Or a trip to Broadway to see that play everyone is talking about. There are so many choices and it’s such a hard decision. Well, you’re in luck – the creative team at Ticket Liquidator is here to help you decide what event to attend by offering their expertise on the summer’s biggest events. Our resident sports, music and theater experts offer their picks for the events you simply can’t miss.
The top 2012 summer sports events from our resident sports fanatic Andres:
2012 NBA Finals and 2012 Stanley Cup
There are some great sporting events a fan who wins our sweepstakes can enjoy this summer. The most coveted tickets in sports will likely be tickets for the NBA Finals and the Stanley Cup, and if you're team is in the mix, $350 will go a long way towards seeing them make history.
2012 MLB All Star Game and Interleague Matchups
The Midsummer Classic, aka the MLB All Star Game, is taking place at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City and if sales are any indication, it looks like fans are excited. MLB also has some huge interleague matchups this summer, including the Boston Red Sox traveling to play the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field and the Subway Series between the Yankees and Mets.
Pacquiao vs. Bradley and UFC 146 and UFC 148
In another big boxing match, Manny Pacquiao takes on Timothy Bradley on June 9 in Las Vegas. Also in Las Vegas, UFC 146 sees Junior Dos Santos vs. Frank Mir and Velasquez vs. Antonio Silva on May 26; while UFC 148 pits Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen on July 7. So if you were thinking about taking a trip to Sin City, events like these might just be what tips the scales!
The Top 2012 Summer Theater Events from our resident theater aficionado Dave:
I live and breathe theatre as a fan, patron, and performer, so I'm always trying to soak up all of the best theatre events happening near me. Thankfully, I live close enough to Broadway to be able to visit regularly, but I also enjoy touring and regional productions, which are often of comparable quality. I am partial to musicals, but I have rarely seen a production that I have wholly disliked. Live theater is about the thrill of a shared artistic and human experience, so get out this summer and enjoy one!
Catch this revival of Mary Chase's play starring The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons as Elwood Dowd, an eccentric man who claims to have an unseen friend that he describes as a six-foot-tall anthrpomorphic rabbit. Opening during Broadway's off-season, this gem will begin previews at New York City's famous Studio 54 in May and officially open in June.
This classic musical is on a 25th anniversary tour across North America, and it is as popular as ever. Most shows that come through my town can't fill our local (2,800-seat!) performing arts center, but this one had the house sold out every night. Find the best seats or last-minutes tickets on TL, and if you need more convincing, read my review of the show.
How to Train Your Dragon
This arena show adaptation of the popular, Academy Award-nominated Dreamworks film features more than 20 animatronic dragons with wingspans of up to 40 feet, along with all of your favorite characters from the movie. Catch this new show at a venue near you and bring the whole family!
The top 2012 summer music events from our resident music expert Adrian:
Osheaga Music and Arts Festival
My first pick for the best event of the summer is festivals in general. Not the one day kind but the three day ones where you wander around in an endorphin-aided stupor liberated from the everyday listening to all the amazing bands playing. Since I can’t spend my whole summer jet-setting between SXSW, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Burning Man and Sasquatch! I’m picking one little festival six hours due North of our little farm. The Osheaga Music and Arts Festival has all of my favorite things. It’s a three day affair located on an island Montreal and features The Black Keys, Snoop Dogg, Sigur Ros, The Weeknd, Santigold, Little Dragon, Atlas Sound, Polica and too many more to name here, eh.
Radiohead is kicking off the second leg of their tour at the end of this month. Someone recently described Radiohead at Coachella as the closest thing to a classic rock act at the festival. After almost 30 years on the touring circuit they could be a cliché at this point but the only cliché they’re peddling is constant re-invention. Their innovative lighting tech and deep electronics create a buzzing, industrial backdrop to the delicate instrumentation and songwriting that make them a must-see live act.
Foster the People
“Pumped Up Kicks” is about as perfect a pop song as there ever was. The fact that it’s about being fast enough in your tricked out sneakers to outrun a deranged teenager who thinks high school is a first-person shooter is pretty much par for course for Foster the People. With videos that feature kidnapping, arson, gangs and reanimation surrounded by colorful, upbeat tunes written by former jingle writer Mark Foster, Foster the People is making quite a name for itself on its first tour. This is a band to watch.
