2012 Tony Nominations RecapThe nominations for the 2012 Tony Awards were announced today by Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, Promises, Promises) and Jim Parsons (the upcoming revival of Harvey, TV's The Big Bang Theory), and one of the season's critical favorites, Once, leads the pack with 11 nods. The new Gershwin musical, Nice Work If You Can Get It, starring Matthew Broderick (The Producers, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Kelli O'Hara (The Light in the Piazza, South Pacific), and the revamped revival of Porgy and Bess, starring four-time Tony Winner Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Carousel) each got 10 nominations.

Several other productions were standouts as well, including the innovative Peter and the Starcatcher (9), the elegant revival of Stephen Sondheim's Follies (8), the energetic cult hit Newsies (8), the critically praised revival of Death of a Salesman (7), starring Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote film) and Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man film), and the British comedy import One Man, Two Guvnors (7). The 2011 summer revival of Master Class received a nomination (for Best Revival of a Play), which speaks to its quality, since Tony voters often forget shows that have closed long before the springtime openings. And even Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, which had quite the long journey to its opening night last June, was recognized with two nominations (for Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design).

There is even some Tony love for shows that flopped, including a nomination for Frank Wildhorn's score of and Laura Osnes' stunning turn in Bonnie & Clyde, for Jessie Mueller's Broadway debut in the revival of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, and for the book of the quirky Lysistrata Jones.

In an interesting development, the category of Best Score is equally represented by musicals and plays with music. Tony voters recognized the musicals Newsies and Bonnie & Clyde, but passed over options like the popular Ghost, Once, and Leap of Faith in favor of recognizing the music in the plays Peter and the Starcatcher and One Man, Two Guvnors.

Make sure to tune in at 8:00pm on Sunday, June 10 to see the winners announced live from New York City's Beacon Theatre. Neil Patrick Harris (Assassins, TV's How I Met Your Mother) is returning as host, so it's sure to be great time!
