Electronic music is experiencing a renaissance with a whole new wave of producers taking the international scene by storm along with the expansion of existing festivals and the emergence of new festivals on the dance circuit. 2011 saw Miami’s Ultra Music Festival break up with the Winter Music Conference, expand from one to three days and create its own week of special events called Miami Music Week, not to mention its already impressive invasion of Ibiza, Korea and Brazil. Furthering its domination of the club festival circuit, the road to Ultrafest is now paved with the summer IDentity Festival, billed as the first ever electronic-ONLY touring festival. As if that weren’t enough (and it’s never enough) rave-heads still have a host of festivals and special events to choose from including the Electric Daisy Carnival, Dayglow tour dates, the Cosmic Opera, and the Detroit Electronic Music Festival among others. Many of the festival headliners share the bill on stages worldwide and are starting to crossover into the mainstream including Avicii, Justice, Kaskade, Rusko, Steve Aoki, David Guetta, Deadmau5, Skrillex, Pretty Lights, Tiesto, Bassnectar, Swedish House Mafia, Above and Beyond and Armin van Buuren. Sounds that have long been the mainstay of the electronic music scene are now being sampled by Top 40 artists and some of techno’s hottest DJs have been tapped to produce records for Jay Z, Kanye West, Britney Spears, Usher, Katy Perry, Korn, Rihanna and many others. Even down-tempo, IDM and chillwave artists like Mercury Prize nominee James Blake, Postal Service collaborator DNTEL and Toro y Moi are getting mainstream attention and signaling the rising popularity and staying power of electronic music.
